A Heartbreaking Change a Single Year Has Made in America

Twelve months back, the environment was entirely distinct. Before the national election, thoughtful residents could recognize America's serious imperfections – its unfairness and inequality – however they still could perceive it as the United States. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law carried weight. A nation headed by a honorable and upright official, even with his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, as October 2025 ends, countless Americans hardly identify the land we reside in. People alleged as illegal immigrants are detained and pushed into vehicles, at times blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for an obscene dance hall. The leader is targeting his adversaries or supposed enemies and demanding federal prosecutors hand over a huge total of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are dispatched across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The military command, rebranded the War Department, has – in effect – rid itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars in public funds. Universities, legal practices, news companies are submitting from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are handled as nobility.

“The United States, just months before its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has tipped over the limit toward dictatorship and extremism,” a noted author, commented in August. “Ultimately, more quickly than I thought feasible, it transpired in America.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. It is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how severely declined we are, and the speed at which it occurred.

Yet, it is known that the leader was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling first term and following the cautions linked to the understanding of the conservative plan – despite Trump himself said publicly he planned to act as an autocrat just on day one – sufficient voters selected him instead of Kamala Harris.

As terrifying as the current reality is, it’s even scarier to realize that we have only been several months into this presidential term. Where will another 36 months of this decline position us? And if the three years becomes something even longer, because there is nobody to restrain this leader from opting that additional tenure is essential, perhaps for defense purposes?

Granted, not everything is hopeless. We will have legislative votes the coming year that could establish an alternate political equilibrium, if Democrats retake one or both houses of the legislature. We have government representatives who are striving to apply certain responsibility, for example lawmakers currently launching an investigation into the attempted money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a leadership election in the next cycle could begin us down the road to healing exactly as the prior selection put us on this unfortunate course.

We see millions of Americans marching in the streets across municipalities, similar to recent in the past days in the No Kings rallies.

A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of America is stirring”, just as it did following the Red Scare in the 1950s or during the sixties activism or during the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the tilting vessel ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he knows the signals of that resurgence and sees it happening at present. As support, he references the recent massive protests, the widespread, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept government requirements they solely cover what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity always remains asleep before certain corruption grows too toxic, an specific act so disrespectful of the common good, specific cruelty so noisy, that he is compelled except to rise.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the crucial issues remain: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it retrieve its position in the world and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind tells me that the final scenario is true; that everything might be finished. My optimistic spirit, however, advises me that we must try, through all methods we can.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that’s about encouraging reporters to adhere, more fully, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it may be working on congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to defend electoral access.

Not even one year prior, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or in several years? The reality is, we are uncertain. The only option is to attempt to persevere.
