Aerial Assault on UN Facility in Conflict-Ravaged Sudan Kills Six Peacekeepers

A unmanned attack hit a United Nations compound in war-torn Sudan on Saturday, leading to the loss of six UN soldiers, per a declaration.

The attack targeted a UN facility in the city of Kadugli, situated in the mid-country region of Kordofan.

Eight additional soldiers were injured in the strike. Each of the victims are citizens of Bangladesh, part of the United Nations mission in Abyei.

“Assaults aimed at United Nations peacekeepers may constitute international crimes under global statutes,” it was declared, demanding those responsible for the “unjustifiable” strike to be held accountable.

Military Points Finger at Fighter Faction

The national army attributed the incident on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a well-known paramilitary group that has been fighting with the government troops for power in the country for since April 2023.

The strike “demonstrates the destructive nature of the armed faction and those behind it,” the military said in a communication.

Context of the Contested Area

The resource-abundant Abyei is a claimed region between Sudan and South Sudan, and the UN mission has been deployed there since 2011, when South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan.

Appeals for an swift truce in Sudan were also expressed to allow “a wide-ranging, inclusive and nationally led peace process” to settle the fighting.

Country Engulfed in Conflict Since 2023

Sudan was engulfed in open war in April 2023 when a dispute for control between the military and the RSF escalated into full-scale combat in the national capital and elsewhere the country.

  • The conflict has taken over 40,000 lives, a figure rights groups consider a significant undercount.
  • Recent fighting has been concentrated in Kordofan, notably since paramilitary forces seized El Fasher.
  • The conflict has wrecked cities and has been marked by horrors, like systematic rape and ethnic slaughter.
  • These crimes have been called war crimes by international bodies.
  • The situation has also caused the globe's most dire humanitarian disaster and driven parts of the country into starvation.
