Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined term surfaced several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a child who has lost their whole family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that once promoted peace has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
