Based on information provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have perished while detained beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has indicated that the true figure is probably substantially greater, because of many of missing detainees from Gaza.

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Restricted Israeli data suggests that the vast majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who lost their lives in prison were civilians, according to a related examination.

By May of 2024, a defense forces registry tracking all fighters in Gaza, a registry of more than 47,000 identified persons, documented merely 21 fatalities in custody. By that point, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had died in prison.

Detention Conditions

“In spite of this large quantity of deaths, throughout the conflict no one has faced arrest,” the spokesperson stated. “There are no indictments over any death.

“As long as these policies remain in effect, all Palestinian detainees in confinement is in danger, even the healthy ones, even the juveniles who have no underlying conditions.”

Prominent Examples

Several casualties in confinement have been high profile, such as a senior medical chief who perished in detention after 120 days in custody.

A prisoner incarcerated with the deceased stated that he was taken to the yard by correctional officers immediately preceding his passing, visibly injured and exposed from the waist down. His body has not been returned to Gaza.
