Progressive Congressional Candidate Indicted For Windy City ICE Protests

The progressive congressional candidate, an progressive hopeful for the House of Representatives, has been indicted over allegations related to her participation in demonstrations outside an ICE processing facility in the vicinity of the Chicago area last fall.

The Federal Charges

Federal court documents, filed last week, claim this twenty-six-year-old Palestinian American candidate and five other individuals “physically hindered and impeded” a federal agent who was “forced to drive at an extremely slow rate of speed” to avoid injuring any of the conspirators.

The candidate, who is running for Illinois’s ninth congressional district, was charged with conspiracy to forcibly impede or injure a federal agent and hindering the agent while they were performing official duties.

Claims of Obstruction

As stated in court papers, those involved “planned together with others” to prevent by force, intimidation, and threat, a federal law enforcement officer, from discharging the duties of his office.

Prosecutors claim that Abughazaleh, along with the other individuals, “struck forcefully” on the officer’s car, “crowded together in the front and side” of the vehicle and “pushed against the vehicle to hinder and impede its movement”.

According to the indictment those accused etched the word “pig” on to the vehicle and damaged a side mirror and rear wiper.

Additionally, it is claimed the candidate in particular “joined the crowd at the front of the government vehicle”, and with her hands on the hood braced her body and hands against the vehicle while staying directly in the car’s way, obstructing and blocking the officer.

Defendant’s Statement

Following the indictment, the congressional candidate, who is known for her large social media platform, labeled the charges “a politically motivated case”.

“This represents a blatant effort to suppress dissent, a right guaranteed by the First Amendment. These charges are part of a pattern by the current administration to outlaw protest and penalize vocal critics. That is the reason I will contest these unfair allegations,” she stated.

She continued: “As I and others exercised our first amendment rights, ICE has hit, dragged, thrown, shot with pepper balls, and teargassed hundreds of protesters, myself included. Merely because we dared to assert that hooded individuals seizing our neighbors and frightening our community should not become routine.

“This prosecution aims at our freedoms to demonstrate, express opinions, and connect with those who oppose government actions … Throughout my career, I have resisted the nation’s regression toward authoritarianism, and I will not stop now,” she added.

Wider Implications

The charges emerge amid increased federal immigration operations in various left-leaning cities such as Chicago – a move which has been harshly criticized by local and state leaders.

The raids have drawn widespread opposition from the public, congressional Democratic lawmakers and civil rights groups, with the ACLU describing them as a “build out of a national paramilitary policing force that could be used to … consolidate President Donald Trump’s power”.
