A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The purpose of the attack has not been established and no arrests have been made, police said.

How It Happened

Authorities said that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the building overseeing the installation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, as per local media.

"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," an official report confirmed.

Security camera video reportedly depicted a individual with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a security uniform opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.

Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were discovered at the crime scene.
