The Battle Royale's Niche Movement Mechanics Are Going Mainstream This Season

The game developers have a special treat prepared for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for the holidays. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's highly fluid movement will be pleased to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on Nov. 4.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Named "Mantle Boosting" by the developers, this feature gives players a surge of forward momentum when scaling obstacles. According to lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting has unofficially been a feature of Apex Legends for quite a while, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for the average player, and typically employed by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or esports competitions. In this update, the team is making it easier for players of all skill levels to execute these tricky movement boosts.

"This technique existed in Apex for a while, but the movement requires skill to pull off and gamers would never know it [is in the game] without external guides," Canavese states. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify the timing to activate the fast-paced movement ability, opening up the mechanic and adding new ways to compete for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a once niche movement quirk available to everyone? Principal designer the development lead says the team wants players to feel powerful — even those who are inexperienced.

"Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we looked around at other games, observed what our players execute, and we said, 'What if we provide some of this power to more players?'" Mohan clarifies. "Since currently, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to use — it requires to change controls and execute within precise timings. So we said, 'How about we create a polished version?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is largely the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends Horizon, Rampart, and Valkyrie receiving buffs to help keep them in motion. The cooldown period on her tactical ability is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will boost players into the air faster than it used to. Her defensive walls feature overhead protection and the ability to provide speed boosts to those nearby. But it's aerial Valkyrie receiving significant improvements now, with multiple tweaks applied to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that her moment is here," says character developer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been dominant in the past, but with the introduction of other characters, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. This presented an ideal chance for us to reexamine multiple elements [of her kit] and sort of restore her to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, Holstead notes the team assessed each of her abilities and implemented some powerful modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing her speed during flight, and this equipment regenerates three times faster, allowing her to spend more time aloft. Now she won't take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to tag opponents who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches her entire squad skyward for redeployment or retreat — requires reduced delay to fire up. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that players can choose to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her rockets, or further speed up her ultimate activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," Holstead comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the lone airborne map, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. Respawn state Apex Legends this update focuses on providing gamers the resources they need to compete in matches.

"Really, we examined the game's fundamental nature as a movement shooter," says lead Legend designer the lead.

The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at the specified times.
