When Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Widely-Shared Image Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, similar to other others in the area, heard cracking sounds ringing out across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the road, conversing with a couple who had run up the slope still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. This turned out to be a lifeguard, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting towards something that certainly every part of you would signal you to run in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews attending to numerous the injured.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to emerge from the local area, with the beach facility beside the site of the incident serving as a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as entering the water to assist people who were struggling.

Following the events, messages of appreciation circulated widely. An online statement conveyed thanks for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The group of rescuers published a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your kind sentiments and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the compassion shown towards our responders,” the group commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many professional lifeguards, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting commenced through to late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a local official.

“These individuals demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our iconic beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that day should be commended.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the terror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much good we have witnessed in the midst of such darkness.”
